I view my work with clients as a collaborative relationship led by the client, as they know their life better than anyone else! I use a person-centered and strength’s-based approach with each client through a multicultural feminist lens. I will often utilize psychoeducation to help clients build their mental health “toybox” with skills in mindfulness, thought tracking and reframing, and creative expression for the feelings and experiences words just can’t express. I specialize in working with those who have experienced interpersonal and systemic trauma, as well as those who are exploring their gender, sexual, and romantic identities. I have a significant amount of training in play therapy when working with children, adolescents, and adults, including Sandtray therapy (my personal favorite!).  I am a neurodivergent, LGBTQ+, and sex work affirming counselor who believes in the power of play, education, compassion, and acceptance

Valerie is attending Eastern Illinois University for her master's degree in clinical Mental Health Counseling.  Her path to choosing this career is lengthy, but her personal life experiences are what led her to this rewarding career.  Valerie also has her Bachelor of Human Services and a minor in Psychology (Eastern Illinois University).

Valerie’s population of clients that she has worked with vary since she has worked in a community mental health center prior to this internship opportunity. Her background in working with children has given her a heart for wanting to work with children in a mental health setting.

Valerie uses person-centered therapy and Cognitive-Behavioral therapy as tools to help her clients become the best version of themselves. Although, those two therapies are a personal favorite, Valerie is open to using other therapy skills to help clients make progress.

On her free time, Valerie likes to read personal growth books, listen to music, play with her Border Collie, play Rummikub, and visit her family over the weekends.
